About Bethany

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been curious about what makes people tick and how people live their lives. I’ve followed this curiosity in a number of ways, from studying American immigrant history, to making soup for the people I love, to becoming a therapist. Nothing fascinates me more than the quirks and beauty of human beings.

Education & Experience

I have a B.A. in History & Writing from Indiana Wesleyan University and an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology. I’m a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) in North Carolina, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in South Carolina, and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Washington. I’ve been working in supportive capacities with individuals, couples/partnerships, and groups for 15 years.

As part of my education, I completed a year-long internship with MEND Institute (formerly Seattle Therapy Alliance), an organization in Seattle that provides low-fee counseling within holistic, anti-oppressive frameworks. I’m invested in a lifelong pursuit of collective justice and liberation, both personally through organizing and professionally as a healing practitioner. I hold profound gratitude for the organizers, educators, and healers whose work has influenced my development. I’ve been especially guided by the work of Dr. Caprice Hollins, Prentis Hemphill, Resmaa Menakem, Dr. Christena Cleveland, and Smruti Desai.

I’m engaged in ongoing training on working with the body/nervous system and healing trauma. I’m in the third year of a three-year certification as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and have completed Level I of Lifespan Integration method. I’ve been influenced extensively by the work of Kate White in the area of perinatal trauma healing. I also owe much of my overall philosophy of working with abuse and trauma to the work of The Allender Center.

I’ve completed Bringing Baby Home Educator training, Level I and Level II (in progress) of Gottman Method Couple Therapy through the Gottman Institute in Seattle.

I’ve been working with individuals and couples/relationships in private practice since 2016. I've also worked in inpatient mental health care as a group therapist and intake specialist. I was an assistant instructor for graduate counseling courses on trauma, abuse, and racial/cultural identity development at The Seattle School from 2017-2019.

Prior to becoming a therapist I worked in all kinds of relational settings, including child and student development, refugee resettlement, high school literacy coaching, and college admissions counseling.

On the Lighter Side

I’m a lifelong learner. Trees and 80s love ballads feed my soul. I have a deep obsession with rollercoasters and karaoke.

I live and work on Sissapahaw and Keauwee ancestral lands (also known as Greensboro, NC) with my partner, two kiddos, and our dog Bear. I find meals, stories, and laughter with loved ones around a table to be one of life’s greatest delights.
